Physical Description:

The portrait is framed by an ultramarine blue background that contrasts with the golden hue of the subject's skin. The palette used by Btoy is limited, which is unusual in his work, and is characterised by a strong use of chiaroscuro to define areas of relief and volume. The use of a golden hue simulates the appearance of a classical bust in an attempt to underline the importance of Van Gogh within the discourse of Art History.

Iconography:

The work represents Vincent Van Gogh, the internationally renowned 19th century Dutch artist and symbol of the city of Amsterdam, where most of his works of art are kept. The work was paired with the work 'Frida Khalo' in 2018. Van Gogh is a common theme in SAMA's collection that can be seen in other works, including 'Vincent Van Gogh' by Sandrine Boulet and 'Van Gogh & Johann Cruijff' by Uriginal.
