The project "De Vrije Bladen van de Dichtersbuurt" aims to achieve the following outcomes:
Cultural and Social Documentation: Present a detailed overview of the unique cultural and social dynamics of the Dichtersbuurt, highlighting its diverse migrant backgrounds and the ongoing urban transition. This will include a comprehensive memory capsule that documents the street art zeitgeist in the Dichtersbuurt.
Community Engagement through Art: Successfully engage local residents, including children and teenagers, in the creation of street art, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their neighbourhood. The participatory art process will be documented and showcased, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the project.
Historical and Literary Integration: Develop a narrative inspired by Jan Jacob Slauerhoff and other poets after whom the streets of the Dichtersbuurt are named, connecting historical and literary heritage with the current community. This narrative will be reflected in the artworks and the overall theme of the project.
Social Inclusion and Intercultural Dialogue: Promote social inclusion and foster intercultural dialogue through street art, creating a platform for diverse communities within Nieuw-West to interact and bridge cultural gaps. The project will showcase street art as a powerful tool for social cohesion and cultural exchange.
Creation of a Community Mural: Collaborate with an international street artist and a local artist to produce a new mural that reflects the identity and aspirations of the Dichtersbuurt residents. This mural will serve as a lasting symbol of the community’s creativity and unity. Locally, the public production of a street art mural involving Nieuw-West residents and Amsterdam street artists will spark discussions on the regeneration of Nieuw-West. The project will harness the community's power to generate local identity, promote social inclusion, and encourage active citizen participation.
Audience Expansion and Network Building: The project also aims to recruit new members and participants from Dichtersbuurt and residents who are active at local social partners. In addition we shall be broadening SAMA’s network through the European STAR 2.0 partners, who will experience the publication and learn about the impact of street art on Amsterdam, spreading these insights through their networks and attracting new audiences to Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
To achieve these outcomes, SAMA will undertake extensive research, interviews, archival and collection research, neighbourhood mapping and artistic exploration. The objective is to produce a comprehensive memory capsule documenting the street art zeitgeist in the Dichtersbuurt.
