An end-of-year story from the Dichtersbuurt
At the end of the year, the silence falls differently on the Dichtersbuurt. It gets dark early, the cold muffles the sounds of the street, and the pace slows. It's then that the gentle forces become visible: a greeting that lingers, a door open for coffee, a hand that lends a helping hand without being asked. It's these small gestures that make winter bearable—and that reveal what kind of neighborhood we are together.
2025 was a year of movement. Of farewells and change, but also of connection, creativity, and care for one another. While some houses became vacant and the future of the neighborhood became increasingly clear, life among them continued to flourish. In community centers, on the streets, around the church, and at kitchen tables, people laughed, worked, shared, and reflected.
Anyone walking through the neighborhood saw it everywhere. In the people who continued to dedicate themselves, some for decades, others just arriving. In residents like Loes, who, with her practical approach and warm presence, shows how self-evident care can be. In Nadia, who, despite everything, is determined to return. In the quiet dedication of many who may not always be in the spotlight, but without whom the neighborhood wouldn't be what it is.
This year, the neighborhood came together again. During Neighborhood Day, at shared meals, at the Moving Shop, at the language café, and for creative projects. With STRAATWIJS and Urbanites United , the neighborhood literally became a canvas: walls were filled with color, stories were given space, and residents recognized themselves in what appeared on the streets. Art wasn't the end point, but the beginning of conversation and connection.
At the same time, we're looking ahead. New construction is getting closer. That brings hope, but also questions. How do you renew a neighborhood without losing its soul? How do you ensure that existing networks don't disappear, but grow alongside it? In the Dichtersbuurt neighborhood, there's a strong understanding that bricks and mortar are important, but people are indispensable. That it's precisely this sense of community that makes this place home.
In these final weeks of the year, we take time to reflect on what was. On everything that has been built, often in small steps. And we look ahead, with the desire to continue to nurture those gentle forces. By keeping doors open, by continuing to see each other, by making space for old and new neighbors.
Winter marks the end of a year, but also the beginning of something new. If there's one thing we take away from 2025, it's this: the warmth of a neighborhood isn't found in grand plans, but in daily attention. And as long as that attention continues, the Dichtersbuurt can change—without losing itself.
We wish everyone a warm end to the year and look forward to everything we can continue to grow together in 2026.
